How is medical massage different from a massage in a spa? Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues with the hands, arms, elbows, and feet. The massage you receive in a spa setting will be very calming and is designed to relax and rejuvenate. Medical massage utilizes appropriate assessment tools to uncover specific areas of tension and pain. Your medical massage therapist will assess certain postures and mechinisms of injury to set up a treatment protocol to get you relief quickly. Oftentimes a massage in a spa setting will be a 60-80 minutes in length, while medical massage is much more precise and can range in time from 15-60 minutes. Top
What do the initials NCMMT stand for? NCMMT are the initials for a Nationally Board Certified Medical Massage Therapist. To use the designation of NCMMT, a therapist must complete initial coursework in massage therapy, an additional 500 hours of advanced study, and pass a comprehensive national exam given by the Medical Massage National Certification Board. Currently there are only 140 therapists in the United States that can use this designation.Top
